Fun Facts:
In the 1600s, the ratchet sofa would sit in front of the fireplace in the castles. With the high back and arms in the upright position, the wind would be blocked from the open windows and the individual sitting on the sofa could enjoy the heat from the fireplace. In the summer time, the arms would be in the downward position so the individual could feel the breeze from the open windows. An additional purpose for the arms being functional is that it could be used as a bed. Also, in the 1600s men in their steel armor would sleep on the sofa without removing their armor.

  1. Ginger w/ Laurel Grove

Great trivia question! I had actually worked on a castle in San Diego that had a pair of the sofas. The clients purchased the castle and chose to purchase a few pieces of furniture, the sofas being one of the few. They flaked a fireplace that had the largest mantel I have ever worked on – 6′ high x 8′ across. I brought in Kentia palms w/custom 4′ planters that floated by the sofas. In our industry, design can change, but certain things come back around and can be timeless, don’t you think?
